WEBINAR DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this webinar is to increase knowledge of strategies for the prevention, control, and elimination of TB with the goal of strengthening priority efforts at state and local levels. The webinar will outline the rationale for updating the previously published recommendations and provide an overview of the core functions and essential services that fall within the scope of responsibility of the TB program. The format will include didactic presentations followed by a moderated discussion.

WHY COURSE IS NEEDED
As TB rates continue to decline, TB programs are faced with the challenge of maintaining TB prevention and control and accelerating the decrease in incidence necessary for TB elimination. Healthcare providers and public health staff should be aware of the essential components of a TB control program in order to prioritize strategies for the identification and treatment of individuals with TB disease, conducting contact investigations to find and evaluation potentially exposed persons, and risk-based screening, testing, and treatment of persons with latent TB infection. In addition, TB programs need new approaches for diagnosis, surveillance, treatment, and prevention, including collaborating with partners in the public and private sector, engaging patients and community groups, and ensuring ongoing training and education for staff. This webinar will outline the roles and responsibilities of TB programs within the public health framework.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able:

  • Explain recent updates to the Essential Components of a Public Health TB Prevention, Control, and Elimination Program report.

  • Outline implications of the report as part of an overall framework for the core functions of TB programs.
